That wasn't a three layer stencil. It's an optical illusion that you experienced. The "grey" eye was actually the same color as the rest of the black. You made it darker than the rest of the black. ;)

heh, yeah I just noticed that, I guess its because photoshop thinks that the ear is a washed out piece of the person, like stray hair..idk
