Eric Hipke describes his escape from the Storm King fire blowup on July 6, 1994. The video was shot during the South Canyon Staff Ride that took place on May 25, 2006. Eric is standing at the top of the West Flank fireline, just below the Zero Point.
That takes some serious balls to go back and relive that experience, especially considering how close he was to becoming the 15th life lost...

WOW!!! Yes Yunleilei,, I feel like you do!Their memory is etched into my soul since I read the book. I've given it to my 19 yr old son. I hope he reads it. I hope he has the desire to be a "hotshot" or smokejumper.. I'm too old.

wow. i can't believe this is online! i read Fire on the Mountain last year, on recommendation by my partner on the ambulance (he was a FF with a local volunteer dept); after i read it, i wanted to be a wildland FF, so i joined his department. the names in the book became to me almost like names out of the bible - having something of a loftiness to them, an untouchableness. to see Erik Hipke as he is today really makes the whole thing real. thank you, whoever posted this.
