you could probably keep it fresh for longer. what you want to do, as they do at floral shops, is when you cut the stems, cut them under water or under running water. cutting them in the open air causes the xylem tissue (water conducting part of the plant) to get a little air bubble or air pocket in the stems that will make it not conduct water well. you could probably expect the yield to last 20 - 30% longer by cutting them under water.

Just put it in the water and DON'T put it in the fridge. Basil hates cold!
Leave it out on your table and enjoy it. It does not need the plastic bag.
