World Bank Group President Robert Zoellick is calling on leaders of the world's richest countries and major oil producers to act now on surging food and oil prices.

Zoellick says the world is entering "a danger zone," and about 10 billion US dollars are needed to meet the short term needs of the places and people hit hardest.

Liberia is one of those...rising food prices have pushed 200 thousand people into poverty there.

  • @usespanner1 We can import food crops from our income generated from exports but we don't have to because we have enougth land available. We are not like the Middle Eastern or North African countries that lack arable and firtle land needed to feed their people thus creating an environment of food insecurity and vulnerability. Any country that can't feed it self lacks genuine security. Yes we have the potential for cash crops, food crops, fruits, etc. Liberia doesn't have to import any of these.

  • @marck224

    Yeah okkey, it's true.

That case the government has got a big amount of export-income.

Liberia can export palm oil as it's price is the highest and can import cheaper other agriculture products, such as rice or graint.

It's the merhandising, the free trade.

  • Liberia food crises has nothing to do with brith control. Liberia is three and the half times larger than Rowanda in size. It's population is 3.5milion people while Rowanda papulation is 10 to 11million people. But Rowanda can feed it's population. We have a tropical climite and soil to support any agriculture we need and natural resources. But we lease our land for 50 to 99yrs to western companies to grow rubber and oil palm at the end, we import the staple food we should grow at home..RICE.

  • Other option is giving birth only 2-3 children instead of 7-8 or more..

  • food crisis happens everywhere, in a very poor country like philipinnes too, thats the world should sharing each other

  • "minister of agriculture" my ass. Mr. toe is a joke is is the rest of the government. Stop making excuses get the job done or get the hell out. Stop sticking your hands out every time. You ought to be ashame of your selves so called Liberian leaders!!! Change is coming soon!!!!!

  • Loans are granted to Pakistan but are not monitored/audited to see the completion of the project they are sanctioned for. Pakistani ruling class & govt departments eventually eat up the entire sum. Are these loans granted to promote hypocrisy, gradually leading to fake inflation, injustice & poverty? The end result nowadays is reaction in the form of suicide bombing & destruction due to the problems mentioned. Kalabagh Dam & many projects are just a dream due to this attitude of IMF & World Bank

  • Chris Toe does not look hungry. I hope he is giving all the money to his people and not keeping any of it for himself.

  • What good is humanitarian aid if it isn't free
