technology gives us so much. But what does it take away?

(times are off)
1:08 Remembering travelling Turkey. being separated from technology, and immersed in the Flow.
1:15 Observing a people newly introduced to TV and... Baywatch. TV as a tool for creating desire. Because of its foundations in advertising, it is built around the market, and turns people into consumers.
1:18 studying the core of what we are and believe and value. also studying what was a product of socialization process. Turkish people, going from socialization of family/community to socialization of media.
1:24 how much of our eperience of the world are actually experiences and how much are degrees separated experiences. terminal based living. becomes a replacement for "real" experience for many people.
1:27 as a culture, are we slipping into a digital life and away from real life? its a tool that needs to be balanced.
1:28 the world is filled with stimulus. giving us stimulation, but bypassing the experiences.
1:30 balance sought between using a tool and letting it become our life.

  • I connected with your point about deconstructing our own socialization and acculturation by various media since childhood & your giving such introspection the patina of a Joseph-Campbell hero's journey. For the last ten years I've avoided 99 percent of the commercials and ads directed my way, and it definitely makes a difference in outlook & consumption patterns. I've also given up cable TV for 3 years going on life now, comparing it to living with a drug dealer. Little choices really do add up.

  • @MrSamDeeds Living with a drug dealer. Totally!

  • I've recently thought to myself why it is I'm always looking for opportunities to strike up conversations with the elderly. This is WHY! They, for the most part, have escaped the clutches of the technologies that have rendered most people under 30 years old unable to carry on a satisfying conversation.

  • @FenderMadison What an awesome realization. I am going to work to remember to reach out .

  • You said it so well. I see people all the time at my work walking down the hallways staring at their terminals instead of watching where they are going and interacting with other people. It's really kind of scary where we as a people are in this digital age. Disconnected... Makes me kind of sad for our future generations.

  • @Lionagogo I think it is a chapter for humanity... it will correct itself as nature does. <3

  • I agree completely, were all tunning out and losing the personal connection of humanity. I myself have to many terminals of distraction.

  • My husband and I just went out to dinner with another couple. We all were talking, drinking, eating having a great time. After a while me and the other girl ended up playing a game with eachother on our phones.lol...seriously are we that bored with eachother that we need the smart phone entertainment all the time? I totally get what you are saying.

  • your life sounds very exciting:)

  • @starbaby1975 "Would you be mine? Would you be mine? Won't you be...my neighbor?" - Mr Rogers theme. :)
