Hi !
I have an orange face, and it seem to fail with : a complete cube is solving by 63 mouvements :D and it also seem to don't come back exactely right after fiew turns, so it fail to turn the next face ... but your robot is really great, i will try to make an homemade program who scramble :P Thank's

I have the same problem, seems like it needs external power supply to operate properly, because motor strength reduces after a couple of scrambling cycles.
You can replace your orange faces with a tinfoil or metallic duct tape.

There's som information about it at the author's website, standard NXT light sensor fails at detecting yellow from white and dark blue from green, so custom stickers should be used.

Calculating steps and excluding not working paths would be an algorithm. No algorithm would suggest "random" which is unlikely so solve a rubiks cube in a reasonable amount of time (if ever).

Impressive.
