Duke Kahanamoku surfing wooden longboards and a standup paddleboard (SUP) at Waikiki . Experience the Hula and say hello to the Duke. This clip was made from an ancient piece of 1930's 8mm 'Castle' film supplied by Mr John Mellor of Swaylocks. Tom Bloke makes a cameo appearance.

  • Cheers tentoes, redwood's a nice board building material all the best for the alaia shaping :)

  • Well spotted, that is in fact the person here typing on his 17 foot redwood olo. . . surfing of another Pacific Island at a later date.

  • On the wave surfed on min 2 ish, he past next to shortboards, there were shortboards and acuatic cameras on that time?

  • The water footage in Hawaii shown was probably taken from a canoe using a camera without a water housing.

  • Cool...what's the name of the song that starts at 1:17 ? Thanks

  • Thanks, we can't find the name of the track unfortunately

  • Love the video thanks for uploading such a rare beauty, didn't like the music though some old Hawaiian tunes would have been better.

  • @LoveWaveSurfer think I found that track.... Artist: Bliss Track: Manvantara Album: Quiet Letters

  • Awesome! Be back in Waikiki tomorrow

  • I actually have the 2 pair of vans that were named after him

  • I like surfing. thanksto the uplopader of this wonderful video

  • Thanks Roy,

I think where the film fades off at 2:58, right after that the 'Duke' has a Wahine climb on his shoulders. I have seen that in other video.

I like at 3:30 where there are three people on the same board before the wave leaves them behind. Also, At 3:50 where the one person steps onto the board on the right and then there are two on the same board. Then both jump off.

Ah!! Those were the days.... Mahalo nui loa, Bob

  • I have this same footage! I was impressed that my grandma's cousin got such good film of surfers but I now see he spliced in a professional film with his own film. Mine has a March 1928 date on it, so the professional part probably was filmed before then.

  • Rare find! Unreal.

  • Thanks for uploading! Duke Kahanamoku is a legend! What a beautiful man!
