Great scene from a great show. Cheers was never really known for its touching moments, but this is one of them for sure.

so what season is this? i'm watching all the seasons in order and i just finished the second. i want to skip this episode. :')

Politics. She left to pursue an acting career and in "society" at that point, her element was being pushed out in favor of Lilith types. Powerful women in business were not poetic or capable of wearing hearts on their sleeves. In order to play with the big boys, the new trend was to have someone female be cold and uncaring. Enter aforementioned ex-Mrs. Crane and Rebecca Howe. That made the show #1 on television. To bring Diane back would've been bad luck. "If its not broke, don't fix it" method.
