Yes, he's just singing about smiling at the obstacles in life, no matter how rough. I gather he'd hoped to face almost anything with a smile. There's little doubt thought that it became a pot anthem. I just think that is in spite of the original intent of the song.

@b33p3rz I admire Neil Young. Same for Townes and others, but my only love is John Prine. I don't care what y'all say! He wrote every song just for me! Anyone know if he's still touring? Coming to Dallas soon?

Clever, intelligent lyrics--what a joy in this era of musical numbness and mediocrity. Thank you, Lord, for sending us John Prine!

Master class in singing, song-writing, melody-making and being able to interact with an audience without being bombastic or egocentric (all these dancing, prancing, lip-synching, nincompoops on stage nowadays should take note).
Prine said this wasn't about drugs, but the inference kinda caught on. I don't think he did anything to dissuade that connection as it took force, but he has said this was just about his ability to keep himself amused by the little comedies of everyday life. Who knows.
I hope they play Prine in heaven.
