mh... is difficult for talk about your problem without image, I try. Create new material->Diffiuse click on map and assign Checker map. In Material Editor on the right you have "go to parent" click on it for came back on the top level in the material editor (or standar material) after you can select object and assign material to it. In my example I create the checker material for more quick tutorial. in not the default slot.
