In 1983 Roland Hagenberg took a series of exceptional photographs of late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat in his New York studio. The portraits show Basquiat unassuming, not posing, as he did later in his official career photographs. Hagenberg's series -- reminiscent of the Hans Namuth photo session with Jackson Pollock -- is now featured in the new film documentary "Basquiat - Une Vie" by French director Jean Michel Vecchiet. In addition the Musee d'Art Moderne in Paris and the Beyeler Foundation have included Hagenberg's Basquiat photos in their exhibition catalogues.
