Environmental Defense Fund President Fred Krupp discusses how the U.S. and other developed nations can influence the environmental impacts of China and India's rapid growth.

-----

Fred Krupp discusses his new book Earth: The Sequel - The Race to Reinvent Energy and Stop Global Warming.

The Environmental Defense Fund helped reduce acid rain in the 1990s by using market forces, and last year it played a role in the buyout of Texas utility TXU that reduced the number of planned coal-fired power plants. The advocacy group's president, Fred Krupp, believes business-friendly approaches such as carbon cap-and-trade systems are the best way to fight global warning.

His new book, Earth: The Sequel, highlights the entrepreneurs, scientists, and even a former bus driver on the Trans-Alaska pipeline, who are betting on the free market to create new wealth and build a post-carbon economy - The Commonwealth Club of California

Fred Krupp is the Executive Director of Environmental Defense, a national environmental organization that links science, economics and law to create innovative, equitable and cost effective solutions to the most critical environmental problems.

Krupp leads Environmental Defense’'s teams of scientists, attorneys, engineers, and economists in developing solution-oriented strategies to tackle a wide range of U.S. and international environmental problems including global warming; protection of endangered wildlife and ecosystems; restoration of inland, coastal and ocean habitats; elimination of environmental threats to human health; the protection of tropical rainforests.

Since Krupp joined Environmental Defense in 1984, its annual budget has increased from $3 million to more than $35 million, full-time staff has more than quadrupled from 50 to over 200, membership has expanded from 40,000 to more than 300,000, and new regional offices opened in North Carolina and Texas.

  • @mallamoozoo Oooh yeah, after extolling and enjoying the values of capitalism and mindless consumerism for 200 years, lets lecture the third world that's slowly starting to gain legs on how to NOT follow them. F off.

  • over the past 100 years, 85% of the green house gases in the atmosphere was emitted by 32 industrialised countries( making up less than 10% population) NOT including india and china.

now that they wanna develop - lets just ask them to stop and it would be totally fair on us.

also china has 5 times the population of US and emits roughly the same amt

simple math- energy consumption per citizen in china is 5 times lesser than U.S.

but lets not talk abt these facts. they are just bad and immoral

  • co2 emissions are unfortunately a necessary evil required for development and all people have equal rights to development therefore we should aim to reduce the average per capita co2 emissions i.e the west should cut its emissions per capita by 80% and transfer tech to india and china to prevent them from exceeding their emissions per capita.else asking india and china to reduce emissions at this stage of their development is not enviormentalism it is eco imperialism!

  • when will these ideas be put into action. We've seen administrations come and go with false promises. one of the several problems is that when people get power they forget everything...priorities change, everything is politics and bureaucracy. It took days to get food and water to katrina survivors..just shows..

  • Problem is Indians and Chinese are just as ego driven and superficially materialistic as Westerners - they will want to consume just as selfishly as we have done. Unfortunately - the environment can't even sustain just Western consumption much longer - so to then throw in 2 billion more consumers - it's turning up the heat just as things are already about to blow!

We are SCREWED! Seriously - only catastrophe is going to establish equilibrium in the environment. Humans are just too selfish.

  • China and India have a LOT more people. US is still way ahead in per capita pollution. You can't just compare countries...otherwise France and Singapore would have the right to pollute as much as the US.

  • thanks

  • When the US gets its act together, the world will stop being so antagonistic towards climate change reversal unity.

But honestly, if you still deny climate change, fuck your aspirations.

XVX for life, R.A.S.H. 'til death.

  • What an incredible fallacy.
