What is the Ava Ceremony?

The Ava Ceremony is the epitome of Samoan ceremonies in Samoan culture to welcome visitors. It may be immediately described as the formal and official acceptance and welcoming of visitors into the village by the village council chiefs. A particular family of the village usual serves as the immediate specified host.

The Ava Ceremony literally commits the village to participate in the protection and feeding of the guests. It commits the village to participate in the exchange of information, respect and mutual benefits, presentations of gifts and other forms of pleasantries and protocols that establish relationships between Samoans

Samoan Fia Fia are Samoan feasts that include dancing, song and the famous fire knife dance. The Samoan Fia Fia is extremely entertaining and gives visitors a bit of insight into "fa'a Samoa" (the Samoan way).

The Le Vasa Resort has a weekly traditional Ava Ceremony Samoan Fia Fia show. Their friendly staff will be pleased to show you how to do the Samoan Siva dance, give you free Samoan language lessons and teach you how to weave Samoan baskets.

Siva is the Samoan word for dance, but it also refers to a particular type of dance in which the performer usually stands and enacts an everyday activity.

For the Samoan Siva dance the performer usually wears a "Tuiga", a headdress made of feathers and human hair.

Fire Knife Dance
Traditional Samoa fire dancing is one of the great cultural experiences of Samoa. The most glamorous is at the Le Vasa Resort near Apia with professional male and female dancers and traditional costumes of mat dresses and flower garlands performing traditional dance with the highlight being the Samoan Fire Dance.

The dance routine is performed to upbeat rhythmic drumming, hand clapping and singing. After the dance, Le Vasa Resort puts on a traditional feast.
