Vieques is the crown jewel of US training facilities, the only Atlantic firing range where the Navy can bomb from sea, land and air simultaneously. However, after a stray bomb killed a civilian in 1999, a protest that had been going since the 70s was rejuvenated.

You people posting comments here have no idea of what's really going on in P.R. U.S.A is not the contemporary liberator. They are exploiting, abusing, and taking advantage of the Latin American countries, more in P.R. since they own the island basically, and now the Middle East . P.R. I am a documentalist.I taped over 2,000 hrs. of what happened in vieques the las 10 yrs, I can speak the truth. The Navy was making over 80 millions a year,renting vieques to other countries.Vieques got 0. Just bombs, contamination,deseases,and death. Any one who speak in favor of what the navy did here, are CONSPIRING with the abuses to the woman and children and old people that die as result of contamination in their bodies. It is not any different than any other CRIME or CRIMINAL! SIMPLE!

I've been in Vieques twice back in the mid '70's. Both times with the Marine Corps. I had no idea this was such a political hot-potato! As for bombing being so bad, well, some of those people in Vieques incorrectly stated that this is the only place that the U.S. bombs its own soil. No, that is incorrect; they do so in North Carolina at Camp LeJeune and at Ft. Bragg. They also do it in Minnesota and California. I'm sure in other areas as well.

Despite of everything, I have to ask where is Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton after may jobs were lost and some of the workers left because they needed the money . Sorry, but one bad thing I heard of my Puerto Rico is that they are so dependent on Government assistance, As long as they don't wean themselves from that, they are not going to be independent. The wealthy won't help because logically they know the independent government will go after all their money

I can releate to this. I really can relate to this. Hawaii, the 50th State of the United States. (Or so it seems seeing as there is no annexation treaty between Hawaii and the U.S..) One of the islands has also suffered the same faith as Vieques. On the island of Kahoolawe, after the attack of Peral Harbor, the U.S. military seized the island, and for more then 40 years, the island was used as a bombing and training ground. Under protest, the U.S. eventually left. So Vieques, I feel your pain!
