Commissioned for the 2007 SAN Expo festival, Mass Movement was installed in the New Cooperage Building in the historic Royal William dockyard in Plymouth on the weekend of the 22 -- 25 June 2007.
The New Cooperage Building once played a pivotal role in preparing stores and materials for sea voyages, it was the place where they were gathered and processed. Within such a building it seemed fitting to have an installation that was driven by air currents, referencing the wind energy that once powered the Naval ships that were supplied from the building.
Triggered by constantly changing air currents the installation plays segments of sound, that talked about the wind and the potential of a changing environment seemed even more germane.
Mass movement created a mesmerizing and slightly disorientating swirling flock of information, that through a process of translation and approximation created an impression of avian chatter.
Delivered by a flock of feathered electronic devices that all had the same calm clear voice (that of actor Ian Draper) reading sections of the shipping forecast the piece became an audible and visual harbinger of omens and predictions that the public could walk amongst. (Jane Edden)
