oh yes they are , LOL , so are snow chain's and snow tyre's , might be worth visiting your local halfrauds or kwit "con" fitters to find out more info :) beside's that seat's are'nt the best of car's on a wet road never mind ice ! LOL , hint for you considering the big freeze is on its way again ! : reduce tyre pressure to 21 psi, allows more rubber to make contact , use 2nd to pull of in, allow clutch to come up fully and car to pull itself before gasing it ;)

I´m from Iceland and we have a law that you forbids you to have nailed tires for a certain part of the year (Around summer), if you brake that law you get a ticket of course.
You may not have nailed tires but there are other options. Unfortunately i don´t know what to call it in English, but we call them "Heilsársdekk", which roughly translates to "All year tires".
They are not as effective as nailed tires but do their job.

@TheKaraokeStu you can buy snow tires that have a special rubber that sticks well to ice. There are some you can drive all year round now like the Hankook Optimo 4s

@TheKaraokeStu They're not illegal, they're just not used. We simply don't get enough ice or snow so it's not practical whatsoever. In the Scottish mountains and in northern English mountains you occasionally see farmers putting snow chains on their land rovers and such, but it's very rare. It's pointless in a city cos you only get conditions like this once every 3 or 4 years.

@goldbullet50 No. There is no point. We have instances like this about once every 3 or 4 years. Chances are, the next day this place would be totally ice free for the rest of the winter. So you'd have to fit winter tyres for just one or two days.

@TheKaraokeStu The state that the UK roads are currently in, I don't think it would make a difference lol.

I hate black ice with a passion...

Yeh, they're illegal. We don't have as much snow as colder countries do, so there's not really much use for them
Do you have those winter tires which have those little metal pins in there UK?

@goldbullet50 Unfortunately those aren't sold in the UK :(

@TheKaraokeStu as in nobody carries them or their outlawed?

@NinjaPl33z I think snowchains and studded tyres are illegal in the UK, as the weather changes so much, people would leave them on even after the snow is gone and they'd just chew up the road
