Favignana is a small, mountainous island situated west of the coast of Sicily, Italy, near the city of Trapani.
It was colonized by the Phoenicians then contended between the Romans and the Carthaginians during the First Punic War. It fell to the Saracens, subsequently to the Normans and the Aragonese (Spaniard) rulers.
The island is famous for its "tufo" stone caves and the fishing technique called "tonnara". It is a popular tourist destination for scuba diving, snorkeling, and day trips to nearby locations such as Trapani, Erice, Mozia and Segesta.
