In 2007 a group of twenty undergraduates from the Lyman Briggs residential College of Science at Michigan State University participated in a new summer Study Abroad Program in Paris on language, art and science (http://www.msu.edu/~luckie/paris/ ). In addition to having opportunities to study language at the Sorbonne, and compare the "science of art" to "the art of science," they participated in a senior thesis project where documentary film groups chose to investigate topics that compared contemporary issues, in science and health, of France.

This student-made documentary film examines the issue of smoking in europe. In Paris the number of people smoking was a surprise to the group members. They investigated the topic by interviewing a number of europeans and americans visiting paris. After a few interviews mentioned their support for the new law, the student group came to the conclusion that while parisians do smoke more often than americans they may be open to passing a new anti-smoking law in paris to protect the staff of cafes and restaurants who would be exposed to second hand smoke of their customers. After one young parisian student at Cite Universitaire said he was not worried about cancer because he had healthcare, some of the members of the film team felt perhaps the universal health care system supported unhealthy behaviors.

The filmmakers state: "Five students journeyed to Paris, France to film a documentary. Once off the plane, they noticed the prevalence of smoking. After observing the Parisians for a few days and researching data on both France and the United States, they decided to do the film on smoking. Together the students formed the group 'Vérité' which is French for truth. Vérité wanted to see if the French habits and attitudes towards smoking were similar to surrounding European countries, yet different from the United States. To find out what happened, watch their documentary... "Through the Smoke"!"
