@lapugenero Well, I just thought it was harsh that apparently for a few months, the family had a hell of a hard time communicating with one another. When I say forbidden to speak Czech, I mean -forbidden-. My grandmother told me hilarious stories about it, but if she spoke Czech she'd get a light smack to the face. The entire point of my comment was to say that you SHOULD learn the language of your adopted country first and foremost, though.

Why is it harsh for people to learn the language of the country they immigrate to? Seems like the first thing I would do if I ever lived somewhere else.

My grandparents forbade my mother to speak Czech when they raised her here in the U.S. because they were living in another country, and must adopt their customs. i think that's a bit harsh, but I get so sick and tired of immigrants (legal or otherwise) who think that businesses and citizens alike have to conform to their beliefs. Nuh-uh. Speak english, if you can't, learn. Otherwise no food ordering, no banking, no casual conversations, etc. for you until you understand the basics to get by.
