This aria is from Haydn's L'Anima del filosofo ossia Orfeo ed Euridice. The singer is Ildebrando D'Arcangelo. The MP3 of the one song can be purchased from Amazon as well as the two disc set containing the whole opera. The label is Decca, the orchestra is the Academy of Ancient Music, the top billed singer is Cecilia Bartoli.

  • Dear youtube friends,

I found a message from The Academy of Ancient Music in my inbox asking me to take down this video. I thought I made it clear in the "info" that I am encouraging people to buy the music. I don't see the point of taking away free advertising but if they insist, I will take it down. Does anyone have an opinion for me?

  • that's a pity' as your info is, as you say, perfectly clearly stated...one of my main reasons for using youtube is to find things i might be interested in buying, not depriving anyone of income. do they give a reason?

  • It seemed like a form letter explaining that I am committing a crime and depriving the AAM of income. I will certainly remove it if they insist but I wish they would rethink it. I discovered Ildebrando from another "terms of use violation" video and began buying his work on CD, DVD, and MP3. Same thing with Opera Australia's Gilbert and Sullivan productions. They always take the clips off of youtube, but I wouldn't have started buying the DVDs had it not been for youtube.

  • @readerjoy - I understand both sides of this. Yes, there are important copyright laws that protect singers and record companies. However, Iearn of new singers on youtube, so I appreciate all that is posted here. And I really appreciate that you told us where to buy the cd. I think it is a great ad for the recording.

  • @sopranosd Thanks for your comment. I feel very conflicted. The music I have discovered and bought through youtube has enriched my life more than words can describe. But I do understand and wish to respect intellectual property. I am so happy you like d'Arcangelo's voice and talent!

  • What a beautiful sweet baritone voice. A new singer to love!

  • I was pleased to see this aria posted here, although I had already bought the cd set, because I thought it would stimulate interest and I sometimes watch and listen to extracts on youtube from items that I own.....occasionally playing one aria or clip(as from a dvd) is not an alternative to having a recording of the whole work.

  • very nice presentation.i am not use to listening to such good singing.

  • Thank you for introducing me to this excellent singer!

  • well done and thanks for posting this! his voice has really darkened since this recording in the 1990s, but this sounds very elegant (to me). love haydn .
