  • (follow-up # 2) In other words, according to you, what is there here that's more than just "not music" ? When - as I have explained down there - the "emotional response" you feel cannot be considered as a sure sign of art... Maybe it's just the fact that they're holding instruments ? Or maybe it is because you had already identified these guys as musicians ?

Maybe the most interesting thing in this piece of noise or music is precisely the fact that it is questionning this. Or maybe not :)

  • (follow-up to the previous comment). So is it really surprising that some people say it's not music anymore when the sound that is being played has been deliberately ripped off of almost all the elements that one usually introduce into sound when wanting to turn it into music (melodic structure, harmonic structure, a common rhythmic grid, etc.) ? How far would you go into calling sound music ? ...

  • @ LeChabada, I agree. @ohbearsocity, I don't think something evoking "a very powerful emotional response" is necessarily art or music. Watching a bunch of people getting mad, shouting and breaking stuff all around them can be very powerful - may even make you feel like joining them in. It seems to me that what Thurston & friends are doing here is precisely kind of getting back to this : causing powerful emotion - using instruments indeed but without resorting to conventionnal music patterns.

  • @bkimsoul, why should you not trust jmm3drum when he says he could play this kind of stuff ? there's nothing here in the playing that is so highly technical that it would seem like very few people in the world could play this. Not even Thurston Moore would pretend there is. Of course though being technically able to play something doesn't necessarily mean one would move the listener. But maybe jmm3drum and his friends would somehow, how can we know ?

  • fantastic

  • @jmm3drum there is simply no way you could get together with 2 of yr friends and make the "same sounds" as this video. poor word choice <3

how is there "no creativity" here, if the video stands as proof to them creating these sounds before your very eyes?

  • also, this piece evokes a very powerful emotional response from me, aurally and visually. Is that not the purpose of art/music and in this case, live improvised music? dang, I wish I were there to see this :o)

  • @giantwindmill gotta agree with you here. @jmm3drum This is NOT groovy music, that is true, but to discount it because it doesn't fit into conventional western standards of music is silly. Your arguments reminds me of early jazz naysayers "all he's doing is just playing a buncha notes, like what does it even mean? it's not even music." To me, this is something completely visceral and to hope for something with more acutely defined structure and "direction" would be destroying this pieces purpose

  • i got to disagree with the last couple of comments - i've watched this video a few times and to my eyes and ears its by no means just a loose free for all...all three musicians are working off each other - with nace as lead - and distinct phases structures emerging. sorry blackwash but if they broke out into a 'groove' i'd be getting my coat!

  • I've been a musician all my life and love all genres. I really tried to give this a chance but it just doesn't move me. Where is the talent, where is the innovation, where is the cohesiveness of the band, where is the musicality....it really is just a bunch of noise. I guess there's a place for it since a lot of you dig it, but I can tell you that I could get together 2 of my friends and we could make the same sounds as this video. There is no creativity here, just a bunch of noise.
