Fine stuff, sad & funny. When younger, for a while I thought "beat poets," "beatniks" & "the beat generation" meant they had a sense of rhythm. As in The Merseybeats, or beat your tambourine. Oh dear. Kerouac's "On the Road" made it clear that it was "beat" in the sense of feeling beaten by the system, down and out. (but further note: just checked Wiki: Kerouac apparently saw it as a synthesis of "beaten down" and "beatific", which is a great idea).
