After the all over the neighborhood procession of two hours, it ends up in front of Saint Michael's Roman Catholic Church in New Haven, CT., where the statue of Saint Mary Magdalena will be taken in and placed on the alter for the 11:30am mass. After the service, the society marches back to the club on Wooster, Street for coffee and Italian pastries. Thousands would crowd Wooster, Street for the week long feast of Italian food and entertainment.

One of my favorite gigs, is playing trumpet in this band at Italian feasts and processions as seen in this video. The Italian symphonic marches mainly used for the feasts, have a very beautiful unique flavor all their own. The melodies are very graceful and eloquent with the baritone horn or in the clarinet or horn section. The music then suddenly becomes forte, joyful and triumphant when the whole band comes in.

In this video is seen a portion of the neighborhood where I was born and raised, which back then was Big Italy. Most of the large apartment buildings are no longer there, and it barely represents a remnant of what once was.

Peace,
Cosmo Carrozza
