Released in May 1968 as Tamla 54166(on Motown's Tamla Records imprint)has that Jr. Walker & The All-Stars-type feel!
-
this song is really good

I have three favorites by the Marvelettes: "Here I am Baby", "Baby must be a magician" and "Don't mess with Bill". I thought they are great as a kid and I have equally respect for them as an adult. Furthermore, I became a "one day Marvelette" as an adult--jealously ousted my career with them.

This has got to best about the best lyrics Smokey ever came up with. Clever, sharp, snappy. His writing created CLASSIC music for the Marvelettes. Would they have even had the same quality elswhere than Motown? I shudder to imagine.
-
From what I know, Smokey did not specifically write this for Barbara McNair. In '66 he was focused on The Marvelettes, specifically Wanda.Motown did not promote Barbara McNair.

they're both equally good....though marvelettes sounds MORE SEDUCTIVE
-
Believe it or not Barbra McNair's version was very good...too bad it isn't played anymore
