The side of Haiti you've never seen...

I went to Haiti with the Tzu Chi Foundation to help with the post-earthquake relief effort. We had a free medical clinic as well as food, blanket, and tarp distributions. A team of Haitian volunteers worked alongside Tzu Chi volunteers. Because I was there towards the end of the short term emergency relief phase, I was able to participate in the Haitian volunteer training session. The purpose of the training was to help the volunteers realize the good that they have done for the community, and to inspire them to continue to do volunteer work in Haiti. The Haitians shared a lot of their feelings about the earthquake and about Tzu Chi. This was truly an amazing experience, everyone cried through every session. Haiti has a long way to go to recover, but at least for these few hours, in the basement of the National Stadium in Port au Prince, there was a sense of unity, a sense of hope.
