@mojame100 I agree. F-16C/D production should've ended prematurely, and moved onto XL derived models. The benefits over the A/B/C/Ds are massive in comparison to the very loss of some of the sustained maneuverability and a small gain in weight.
Imagine an XL with an expanded intake made for supersonice ingestion and engine bay, with F135s for 40k lbs of thrust, or F119s for optimum supercruise performance, AESA radar, maybe 3D thrust vectoring, and canards.

The experiment I liked most when I was at Dryden with the XL was sucking laminar flow off the surface of the wing with a vacuum compressor in the fuselage. You can see a good look at the glove at 2:13

@myquill23 When God said "let there be light" and F-16XL Pilot fliped the switch! :D

Yes, I have been hearing that a lot..
There were reports that this plane served in wars as early as the Bronze Age in 3000BC. Quite a spectacular tour of duty, I must say.

@myquill23 F-16XL was the grand daddy of both the Typhoon and the Gripen. :P
-
Are you sure it was Typhoon who fathered this?
I don't know man, it may look like the Gripen may have had his hands under the Falcon's skirt first.

@PsuPepperoni its a classic :) "gunshot sound"

Shadow is right; this was in computation with the McDonald Douglas F-15 E. The reason why it didn't win the bidding contract is because: 1. the first prototypes could not super cruise 2. The F-15 E does carry a greater payload at a much longer range.
But the truth is. The LM F16 E/F would have been a great replacement for the older F-16 C and D's. Even more so, fit this with a Pratt & Whitney PW 202 engine and you got Super Cruise.

Boy am I glad I live in the USA!
NASA Dryden flight research center got this flying again. 1 of 2.
