Maybe the hardest thing for me to help 'normal' people understand is how drugs and alcohol take over a person's life and that it's not so easy to quit. I get that normal people can have a drink or two and then never pick up a drink for days or weeks. Unfortunately, many people are not 'normal' drinkers and booze completely destroy their lives. I was one of those people who could not quit, and so is Erin.

I met Erin on Ottawa, Canada. I have a lot of respect for Erin. She had the courage to be open and honest about her situation and that is a character trait that will help Erin on the path to her recovery.

Erin only spent a few nights on the streets before she found a woman's home. When she told the story of sleeping on a hospital bathroom floor my heart broke.

Special thanks to outreach nurse Kathy Morgan [http://twitter.com/#!/morgankathy] and Cornerstone Housing For Women [http://ottawa.anglican.ca/cornerstone/]

  • I do feel bad for ANYONE who is homeless. Sadly the "Addicted" ones seem to have NO drive to get and stay clean. They make the same senseless mistakes over and over. Essentially there situation is no ones fault but there own, and should fix themselves far before they expect help,so yeah I find it hard to feel to sorry for people who don't try and expect me the tax payer to bail them out. Its called take personal accountability for your own life!!!

  • @justmom66 I am glad you posted your comment because that's what most people think & you had the courage to say it. thank you. that's why Erin's story is so important. There are many reasons why a person starts abusing drugs, but often once a person stops it is no longer a choice & they cannot stop on their own. Also, the cost to tax payers is far more if the person is homeless. Smart, compassionate & cost effective is to help people get sober.

  • Much of what we go through is because our minds are not made up. We need determination and self respect. If something erodes that we must remove it. The key is be deliberate and make up ones mind on what you want in life until that happens we will stumble through life. Don't wish, do.

  • My best of wishes for her. So many do not realize the burdens/struggles of those whom suffer addictions. Hope she recovers quickly, and has a bright future!

  • "I was lucky to be homeless in the summer." Wow, that hit me.

  • she looks like erinie ahah

  • If she does not have a record, I suggest the discipline of the military. You have a home, you have education, the navy is looking for good folks. She does have a real chance to get out.

  • @justmom66 It is a bit hard to feel like you have a reason to get clean, when you are homeless. Nothing to really look forward to, kwim? I talked recently with one of the local homeless guys, and he said, "Do you think I WANT to be addicted? Do you think I like for everyone to think I am trash?" If people have your kind of attitude, then they should do something to help those people get clean. Offer support, resources, etc. Not just sit and judge them.

  • She's lovely. Blessings to her.
