ZHANG:
And India's recent nuclear deal with the U.S. may be a future solution to its growing energy needs... But while the nuclear plants are being built, the country is looking for alternative sources to meet its fast-growing demands.
STORY:
India suffers a huge power deficit with over 400 million of its billion-plus people having no access to electricity.
And its energy needs are not going to ease in the near future. Scientists believe immediate energy needs could be better met with conventional sources of energy like wind and solar energy.
[Prof. Michael Kumar, Karunya University]:
"...the solar energy is available, right now various ways of tapping the solar energy is possible as I said the cells are easily available and you can convert the solar energy into electricity and use it for various appliances."
Renewable energy sources contribute to only about five percent of India's electricity while coal-fired thermal power stations make up another 65 percent.
Most parts of India receive clear sunshine for most of the year. Solar energy promises to be one of the most replenishing and pollution free sources of energy, an ideal solution for a country struggling to meet its energy demands.
