It produces a rotational environment to conduct heat transfer experiments. Not much empirical data exist for the heat transfer rates through air channels while rotating.
Why does that matter?
If it is known what type of channel geometry gives higher heat transfer rates, then turbine blades can be cooled more efficiently resulting in more efficient gas turbines (power plants, jet engines, etc).
