The thaumatrope was one of the earliest pre-cinema toys that worked on the 'persistence of vision' principle: two images on either side of a disk seem to fuse together when the disk is rotated quickly.

Here instead of an animation made of multiple frames, multiple frames (two to be precise) merge together to form one image. A kind of "anti-animation".

I thought this kind of "anti-animation" would be best suited for a 1 second film. Thus a common theme in thaumatropes - the bird and cage - has been recreated here.
