Andy Lavier, a social studies teacher who splits time between Alamosa High School and Alamosa Open High in Alamosa, Colo., talks with the Colorado Education Association about the importance of public education in a democracy, enjoyment in teaching history to high school students, need for research and multiple inputs to properly link teacher pay to student test scores, positive factors to handling budget cuts in previous years in Alamosa with concerns those factors have been exhausted, conflicting laws and regulations in Colorado that weaken the ability of legislators to adequately fund public education in the long term, need to look for creative and efficient ways of using education dollars, the myth that it's impossible to fire a teacher and how underperforming teachers could improve with better evaluation and professional guidance, training for educators to find and secure private funds and other resources to improve student performance, new school construction in Alamosa through a BEST grant, and encouragement for communities, educators and lawmakers to be inventive, work together and share resources to avoid future budget shortfalls.
