Sheraton Gambia Hotel Resort Spa - Makasutu Cultural Forest - Gambia
The history of Makasutu and the whole décor is spell-binding. The majestic River Gambia is at its most beautiful and riding on the multi-colored piroque boats is exciting because of the wide assortment of beautiful birds, crocodiles, monkeys and intriguing mangroves. The ancient trees, the healing plants the cultural show that is so enchanting and moving is reminiscent of Africa of the past, the nostalgia of simpler times. The fishermen still ply the river for the abundant fish. The women still skirt the mangroves looking for oysters in the same way that it has been practiced for the past 100s of years.

  • Fireflymajck. From my experience if you want to make a million in Gambia, take 2 million. Exploitation occurs of the investors as well as Gambians. Gambia needs sustainable projects - Permaculture, forestation, wild-life preserves, regenerative food production etc.

Makasutu is a great example of a project that preserves, regenerates and brings in revenue to Gambia.

I understand your sentiment, but this is not exploitation, just job creation and investment in Gambia.

  • @KirkbyKev so that now justifies under payng them? if your going to go to the gambia and make millions off of the land and people, at least raise the bar and hold yourselves to a higher standard. At least try to be a leader, not a follower of exploitation. Dont underpay because you can get away with it

  • To Gambian below - please understand the role that eco tourism plays in Gambias economoy and don't denigrate eco projects like this so easily. Gambias average wage is £2 per day, (paid by Gamian and Europeans bosses alike) so these wages were nothing out of the ordinary. Apart from peanuts Gambia has little income but for tourists. The £350 goes out to Gambia in many ways. One day Gambians will own more resorts and benefits from the early work of resorts so please suppor tthem !

  • James English and Lawrence Williams did you also tell spg TV crew that you pay all your employees less than £100 every month even though the average night per person in Makasutu is £350?Does it come as a surprise that you dug both the swimming pools in your hotel my the local people's labour and you paid them less than £5 a day?Interesting you're making the locals sounds evil by cutting own the trees when in the actual fact is YOU'RE THE DERM EVILS.SOONER OR LATER WE GAMBIANS GONNA COME AFTER U

  • interesting

  • James and Lawrence are doing a great job there! And it is such an amazing place now! You should definately check it out. I know I will be going back there as soon as possible.
