FRONTAL OFFSET TEST

OVERALL EVALUATION: Good
Structure/safety cage Injury measures Restraints/dummy kinematics
Head/neck Chest Leg/foot, left Leg/foot, right
Good Good Good Good Good Good

Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
Test details:

The Toyota Tacoma was redesigned for the 2005 model year. Two tests of the Tacoma were conducted, one by the Institute of a 2wd Access Cab and the other by Toyota of a 2wd Double Cab as part of frontal crash test verification. The overall rating of Good is based on review of both tests, which independently result in overall ratings of Good. The ratings and vehicle specifications based on Toyota's test are shown below because the 2wd Double Cab is similar to the crew cab configuration of other pickups tested more recently.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled in both tests. During rebound in the Institute's test, the dummy's head hit the roof rail.

Injury measures — In each test, measures taken from the neck, chest, and both legs indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. In the test conducted by Toyota, measures taken from the dummy's head also indicate low risk of head injuries. (In the Institute's test, a high head acceleration occurred when the dummy's head hit the steering wheel through the airbag, indicating that head injuries would be possible.) Head acceleration from the roof rail hit in the Institute's test was low.

  • I drive a 2000 Toyota Tacoma SR5 X-Cab, 2WD, 4Cyl. I get 25-26 mpg on combined city/highway driving. I drive between 100-200 miles per day, 5 days per week as a hot shot driver. I have over 451,000 miles on my truck and have had absolutely NO major problems with the engine, transmission, etc, etc. We beat the Japanese in WW2 and now they've beat us when it comes to building trucks and automobiles.

  • solid truck.

  • Who wants to bet it will still crank? haha

  • @bliglum A lot of car companies started out making planes for both the Axis and allies

  • That is reassuring. I'm going to inherit my dad's 2008 Tacoma and I wanted to know how safe these trucks are.

  • they should hit other cars. hiting a cement wall is unrealistic cause the wall wont crumple where as a another car would.

  • IIHS and euro ncap=40 mph where's nhtsa=35 mph

  • Yes...but will it blend?

  • I bet this truck still runs fine.

  • I got in a wreck in this truck with a full truck of people getting hit by a suburban going 50 hitting us directly in the front. Other than a couple bruises all 5 of us got out of the truck perfectly fine (the truck was completely totaled in the front and the seats were seperated) and walked over to check on each other. Id recommend this truck to anyone that wanted to get a compact. And i used to say toyotas are for wussies :/

  • I bet all of those trucks tested could still run.

  • @ponlealgoyya agree... but still id rather be some what unconfordable on a truck that i can depend on than on a truck were i gotta be biteing my nails most of the time when im driving.
