I have a question Sophie, if you don`t mind answering? I have a kind of phrase book with me during your lessons (to help with matching words with sound).

Your pronunciation for Greetings and meals of the day sound different to how they look in my book. Is this your Taiwanese dialect or are the words influenced by the strokes above certain letters?

e.g. Breakfast - Zaofan(with marks above both a`s). etc. the "fan" part sounds different.

Forgive my ignorance.

You can say both ways but most people from Taiwan, i would say, say tzan more often than fan. But both are acceptable. :)

Maybe you just don't know how it is with Taiwanese culture then.

All my friends, who are Taiwanese, states that they are "Taiwanese", not "Chinese."

They also get offended when people call them Chinese instead of Taiwanese.

Maybe you should look into the Taiwanese culture a little more before speaking for them.

And I was born in Taiwan and still very involved with the culture, thank you VERY much.

incredible language chinese.... look at it! one syllable per concept...

and the similarity between concepts is illustrated in the similarity between the sounds... 'an' for part of day, 'tzan' for meal.... the 'prefixes' are kept.... zao, woo, wan... outstanding.... it's as if this language was design by efficiency experts! although I must say, as a european I find the 1) use of tones for meanings quite foreign... 2) as well the words are v diff, not related to any language I know; 1+2=difficult

@createsounds if you are referring to race in the strictest biological sense than you are right, language doesn't define race; however, language is a component of culture which itself is a component of ethnicity;

the only diff between taiwan and china is the government; that doesn't make the two folks different, no matter how much they want it to be; so, taiwanese are chinese; they're a type of chinese

the only difference between mainland China and Taiwan is the government, culturally, Taiwanese are Chinese people! that's how I see it;

@dbielby Taiwanese were born in Taiwan under a Taiwanese Government....so naturally they are Taiwanese by nationality even though the race is Chinese. By the same token many Hong Kong Chinese would like to tell you that they are Hong Kong Chinese, not just "Chinese"....
