North to South Adventure

The GR20 is a very challenging trek of 180km along some harsh terrain. Starting at Calenzana the walk takes a difficult route south across the Cirque de Solitude to Conca in the South.

The Northern half has a much ascending and descending making the low mileage days take a long time. The Southern half is slightly less hilly but the distances are greater. On both halves, at the end of each day everyone is hanging out their arse with exhaustion.

There are numerous refuges along the way that have good facilities and water. The Gardien of the refuge can cook too if you're feeling lazy. Some of the refuges also have supplies to buy like cheese and chocolate and stuff. They also have fresh fruit. At refuge Usciulu the Gardien sells postcards and will post them in the morning when he goes down the mountain on his donkey.

The trek usually takes 15 days, but its useful to add another 2 days as rest days.
Apparently some mental fitness freak did the whole thing in 37 hours which cannot be appreciated until you have completed the trek yourself.

There are loads of rivers and gorges along the route with some kickass jumping pools.

I recommend you doing this trek but bear in mind that Paddy Dillon's GR20 book is the best guide to have and essential. It's a little blue book.

Good Luck

  • Amazing video:))

We planning to go in september, but we'll have 14 days to complete gr 20. Is it enough? How many days was your trip?

  • Thanks.

I think we took 15 days for the trek and then 2 extra days for rest days. This gave a good balance between having fun on rest days and challenging walking.

14 days is enough but you will probably have to combine 2 days into one which would be tough but possible all the same.

I recommend the rest days though if you can because it made it feel more like a holiday instead of a test of endurance.

  • Great movie, what kind of music in the background 4:11-7:27?

Our Polish mountains are very similar but not so long...

  • cheers for the comment, the music is Stereophonics- "pedalpusher".
