Olympics and Morality

Pro-Tibet organization holds conference in Israel to discuss the 2008 Beijing Olympics and human rights violations.
The Israeli Friends of the Tibetan People is a group of Israelis who support the Tibetan nation's struggle against Chinese oppression. They recently held a conference questioning whether the upcoming Beijing Olympics will really have any positive affect on human rights. Our Israeli team has more.
The conference was held at the University of Tel Aviv. Experts in sports and world history discussed whether the 2008 Beijing Olympics will help China solve its poor human rights situation. Professor of German History Moshe Zimmerman recalled the 1936 Berlin Olympics in Nazi Germany.
[Professor Moshe Zimmerman, German History]:
"When Hitler rose to power, the question was whether Nazi Germany deserved to host the Olympics, which is an international event in which the subject of race was very important."
In the end, the Nazis were allowed to hold the Olympics. But the world never would have guessed that just five years later, they would be sending Jews to concentration camps.
Using the Berlin Olympics a as a parallel, the "Israeli Friends of the Tibetan People" talked about the Beijing Olympics. Their intention was to raise awareness of the persecution of Tibetans by the Chinese Communist Regime.
[Ran Natanzon, Israeli Friends of the Tibetan People]:
"What we have seen in the last few months is a strong crackdown on the people of Tibet. There have been a lot of forces going into Tibet, and there have been a lot of limitations on basic freedom such as religious freedom in Tibet."
Lobsang Dondhup, a Tibetan who was born and raised in India knew specific details about the number of Tibetans killed and monasteries destroyed by the Chinese Communist Regime.
[Lobsang Dhondup, Tibetan]:
"Nowadays, the situation is worse in China. There are more than 1.2 million Tibetans who are killed and more than 6,000 monasteries destroyed by the Chinese red armies. Tibetans are still in prison for exercising their fundamental rights"
The Israeli Friends of the Tibetan People are devoted to assisting the exiled Tibetan community and providing for their needs.
They point at the many similarities between the Jewish and the Tibetan people - both are small nations who endured violent persecution and long years of exile far from their homelands.
