How to Cure Reverse Pivot Golf Swing, Golf Tips by Jim Mclean
Professional golfers transfer 90% of their body weight to the back leg during the back swing, while amateurs transferred only 50% at the top of the swing.
Stop Tilting, Start Loading Properly for Better Golf Shots and Less Back Pain
It is one thing to know that you reverse pivot, but it is a whole another thing to learn how to pivot correctly. You've practiced, you've taken lessons and you have spent thousands of dollars on the latest equipment, but you still haven't improved your golf game. Maybe it is time to have a closer look, at how well your body is pivoting, in order to become a more consistent player. Improving your strength, flexibility, coordination and balance will sure help you, but it wont do you any good if you dont learn and practice to pivot correctly.
Characteristics of a Reverse Pivot in the Swing.
The reverse pivot occurs when the golfer's back leg is straight and the body weight is shifted to the front leg at the top of the swing.
The head moves towards the target on the back swing and dips low.
The right hip slides or sways to the right instead of turning out of the way, causing the center of gravity to move outside golfers legs.
The left leg bends too much and the right leg straightens.
At the top of the back swing the left knee points to the left of the ball instead of pointing to the right of it.
On the follow through the golfers weight ends up on the right leg with the sole of the foot planted on the ground.
At the end of the swing pain is often felt in the right hand side of the lower back, a result of the spine rocking back and forward rather than the body to turn round it.
Can your back leg sustain 90% of your body weight during the back swing?
The number one reason for reverse pivot or reverse weight shift is due to compensations in the body that are caused by weakness of the back leg's hip and thigh muscles, specifically the gluteus maximus muscles and the quadriceps muscles. The back leg must be able to sustain 90% of your body weight during the back swing.
If a player is weak or has tight hip flexors, hamstrings and buttocks, the golfer will tend to straighten the back leg by locking the knee, so then the golfer will tend to shift the weight to the front leg to maintain balance.
Cures for a Tilt or Reverse Pivot
All the symptoms mentioned above work together intrinsically, and compensate and complement each other during a golf swing, and curing anyone of these will help cure the others. It is a time for experimentation to find which feel works for you.
Put on your PivotPro and take a regular stance and place a golf ball in the center of your stance.
Set the head to the right at address and maintain the angle on the back swing. Try holding an empty coke can between your right chin and shoulder during a few practice swings to feel the new head position.
Put an stance guide rod provide with PivotPro in the device so it touches your right hip, and then slowly try to make a back swing without letting your hip touch the rod. This will promote a proper turn of your hips rather than the dreaded sway or slid of the hips.
Maintain the flex in your right leg on the back swing dont let it straighten and lock out.
Make sure the left knee points to the right of the ball at the top of the back swing. To do this your hips will have to turn.
At the end of the swing make sure your right foot has come up into the classic position where the sole of your foot is vertical and points away from the target.
Weight Transfer
Top of the Swing—Touring and professional golfers transfer 90% of their body weight to the back leg during the back swing while amateurs transferred only 50% of their weight to their back leg at the top of the swing.
Down Swing—On the initiation of the downswing, amateurs only transferred 65% of their weight resulting in the classic reverse pivot position, as oppose to professional golfers that put a force of 110% of their body weight to the front leg.
Stop Tilting Start Turning for Better Golf Shots and Less Back Pain
If a golfer can start to pivot correctly rather than tilt or sway it can greatly improve their game. When they pivot and load correctly, their swing becomes more consistent and powerful, more backspin is found for wedge shots and short irons, and drives penetrate the wind with beautiful ball flight and trajectory.
If you suffer from extreme case of reverse pivoting than it might take some time to be eliminated completely - but the effort will be worth the effort, and the reward will be more consistent, smooth and repeatable swing.
