@burberry73 I think you are right. Kris is the most underrated songwriter of that decade, He wrote so many great songs. Many people do net even know that he wrote "Me and Bobby McGee"

This song does not work when she sings the lyrics. I found myself laughing.
-
brilliant song, it is known in many versions, and yet I always enjoy

on the contrary with most of the comments here, i find this song so painfully beautiful, pure and sincere i actually didn't hear the version i didn't like yet. it's probably my favourite song in the world, so i listened to all versions i could find. kris, johnny, willie, lynn, vikki carr, mullins, trisha yearwood (i was sceptical here because i didn't know her before and she looked like one of the cheap pop singers), stevens, price ... it's great to have a song that so many people can rely to.

this song is only acceptable with Johnny Cash or Kris Kristofferson.

@bobther1 Kris Kristofferson wrote the song, but I prefer Johnny Cash's version.
-
chris wrote that song

You must listen to the versions of this song by Vicky Carr and Sammi Smith they are the BEST!

Lynn Anderson has always sang with a smile in her voice, that's why down and out songs are the best songs for her, but she is still one of the best female voices in music.
I don't know. I identify this song so much with Johnny Cash, it just doesn't sound right with anyone else singing it. No insult to Ms. Anderson intended; she's very good. But this is definitely a Johnny Cash song. (And I was a Johnny Cash fan from my early childhood in the '60s until his death, so I have a good idea what a "Johnny Cash song" sounds like.)

Lynn Anderson's version was happier sounding, maybe that's why it doesn't sound right to you, I like both versions, but Lynn's rendition of most of the songs that she covers, have a happier sound than the original, it's just the way her voice is, the sadness of Johnny's version did work better with this song, but I still can't help but love Lynn's version too, just in a different way :-)
