My dad, John Hicks, shot this 16mm film and also recorded the sound, though these two media were entirely separate and he had no way to synchronize them. The tape rolled continuously for an hour or so, and by listening carefully I was able to grab the bits where I could hear the camera rolling. Then it was just a matter of lining these up with the film cuts and making adjustments to get everything in sync. The first few minutes had no corresponding sound, so I just dubbed in excerpts from the tape. The synchronized sound kicks in at 3:41.
Seen in this film are:
Grandma & Grandpa Hicks
Uncle Walt & Aunt Fran Hicks, and their kids Barb, Susie & Bill
Uncle Red & Aunt Kate Hicks, their kids Mary Lawrence and Josephine, and Kate's mother
Aunt Mary Hicks
FYI, Mary Lawrence is saying "Chatty," a reference to the Chatty Cathy doll she got that day.
Great going. Thats pretty awesome and very creative !!!

Well done! John Waters is quoted as saying "there's no such thing as a bad home movie." which can't be said of commercial films. I imagine that a professional film from the same era would have less Movie-Magic about it than this.

That's really cool how the sound is synced up with the movie. My family has tons of 8mm and 16mm films dating back to the early 40s, but it completely changes it when you can hear the people too. Somehow, it makes the people seem more "real" and not like something that happened forever ago.
