I wanted to have some fun with solar energy, so I created the most inexpensive solar panel I could come up with. I used broken and tabbed solar cells from MLSolar on Ebay and I strung them together and put them in a simple picture frame. I hooked it to a solar charger/light controller (turns on a light when it is dark) and a 12 volt battery and I use it as a giant garden light.
I am sorry to report that after staying out in the weather for 3 months and working perfectly well, my solar panel was blown over by a big windstorm in January. The panel was just leaning against a table and the wind blew it forward and it crashed to the ground breaking the glass and about 30% of the solar cells. Oh, well, so the moral of the story is, tie down your solar panel because they can easily become a solar sail.
