get error: could not connect to server

I'm stumped. I'd send that error message to your web hosting company and see what they make of it. You might first try (if you haven't already) the default setting instead of passive and see if that will connect. This way you'll know all your other setting are correct (host name, username & password) and that it has something to do with your setting it to passive.
