I am also a lucky owner of a restored Philco 37-630. It gets good reception, especially at night. Your video prompted me to fire it up. Your's is the only other working shadow meter I've seen so far. This radio remains one of my favorites.

Thanks for the information. I have a newer Philco Console Record Player AM/FM combo unit. On the Chassis is stamped C-1758, and also RUN-5. On a smaller attached Chassis is stamped PA1. The cabinet appears to be what I would call Chinese modern style with a lucite push button on the front that you push to turn the whole console either on or off. Do you have any information about this unit? It was my aunt's and I eventually would like to get it completely playing again. Thanks Rich

"A magic eye" is a special vacuum radio tube for "see" the wafe reception.

,,it looks like the extra window on the top is a fine tuning light acting as a magic eye, I wonder how they work ?, my Philco aint got one,,lol
Is this shadow eye on Philco comparable to the green eye RCA and Zenith used? Thanks, Rich

The "eye tube" is a cathode ray tube. The shadow meter (sometimes called a shadow graph) is an electro-mechanical operated vane, which shadows against a standard lamp/bulb. Operation is the same, showing a more narrow pattern as a station is tuned to it's center frequency.

Was Philco originally a division of Ford or was it later only used by Ford ?

Philco was bought by Ford in the early 60s. It was originally an independent company since the 1920s.
