Until the beginning of 1997, Bret and Shawn were really close friends. In some footage you can see Shawn playing with Bret's son. Watch the 2011 DVD they were really close friends most of time Bret spent in WWF.

@jwhittle91 Bret had already quit WWF at this point. Vince McMahon had second thoughts about the 20 year deal they signed a year earlier, especially after Bret started objecting to the content of the storylines and dictating to Vince what he would and would not do. So he signed with WCW. But, he was still WWF champion, and they couldn't agree on how he would lose the belt. Vince was afraid he'd take it to WCW and trash it, so he double crossed Bret after they'd agreed to how the match would end.

I'm a huge fan of both guys...
...but if I had to choose between the two, I'm with Bret Hart all the way.

I have to say it, if it wasn't for the Montreal Screwjob, the Attitude Era could have never existed, if it wasn't for that, WWF could not have been in it's best and WCW or ECW could have defeated WWF before great moments as the InVasion, the WWF Undisputed Championship, if it wasn't for this screwjob we could not have enjoyed with wrestlers like Eddie Guerrero or Ken Shamrock and wrestlers with ATTITUDE or stables like DX that were THE BEST, and WCW could have still stayed in the TOP

What is so good about this rivalry was that they really hated each other. Bret Hart hated Shawn in real life for sure. You could feel the comments in this promo was how he really felt. Greatest rivalry in WWF history. 2 of the greatest.
