Your choice of lettering whether you are choosing a granite memorial for a loved one, a personal tribute or a pet gravestone will depend on the color of the granite you choose and the style of lettering you find most appealing to tell your story. Here you will learn the difference between polished edge, V-sunk and letter styles and fonts. Knowing how to choose the right lettering that matches the right granite color can make a big difference in how your memorial looks for a life-time. Choosing the Lettering On Your Monument
The process of purchasing a monument, gravestone or any kind of memorial for your loved one, can be full of pitfalls, head aches and dead ends. We recommend approaching the task as though you were about to go on a journey, a journey down a path that unfolds the story and life history of your loved one. In this way you can capture their favorite memories and represent them in the beauty and natural elegance of a granite stone memorial.
Discovering your loved one's life story and representing it in stone can be expressed from a number of different perspectives. The story can be told using the tools of an artist including color, size, shape, finish, graphics and lettering style.
A good way to begin your memorial creation journey is to review the eight key aspects of life and discover which area of life best represents the life story of your loved one. These include: civic, personality, events, work, accomplishments, faith, heritage and hobbies. When you think about your loved one's gifts and passions, which one of the eight life reflection areas best respresent your memory of them? Here's a great tool you can use to begin your process. Choosing The Best Lettering Style
The message conveyed in the lettering and wording on your granite gravestone or monument will provide an important part of your loved one's memorial. When it comes to the lettering type selection you have many different engraving styles or methods and different lettering fonts to choose from.  When you go out to the traditional cemetery you will see a lot of V-Sunk lettering which is old and traditional.  It is cut very deep into the stone and it has a sanded background panel or what is called polished edge.  These particular methods of text carving are great for light colored stones or stones that have a lot of different color reflections in them.
By choosing a black or any dark colored granite, you have much more freedom to select lettering styles that are sand blasted directly into the polish of the granite.  in other words, the letters don't require additional pollishing or deep sinking and instead leave the natural beauty of the granite showing.  A dark or black granite will allow you to use the greatest variety of lettering styles or fonts and to most easily include things like poems or paragraph descriptions.   Remember that from an artistic perspective, only one or two types of letter fonts should ever be used on a single memorial.

This choosing the lettering of your monument article comes to you as a service of Murphy Granite of Richmond, Minnesota USA.
