Tellme built and continues to operate the world's largest and most reliable voice recognition network in the world. Answering 100% of all calls to numbers like 1-800-555-TELL, 1-800-MERRILL, 1-800-555-1212, 1-800-PICK-UPS, 1-800-Go-FedEx and more than 50% of calls to 411 Directory Assistance, in addition to most inbound calls to American Express, American Airlines, Wells Fargo, Fidelity, E-Trade and Orbitz to name a few... Here is a peek inside one of the earliest "cloud grade" data centers with 99.998% availability (~10 minutes unavailability per year) on commodity Intel-based half-depth 1U servers from Rackable running Solaris x86. The network core featured physically diverse paths, both within the DC and is connected to the telephony network via OC-48 SONET ACCU-Ring with diverse paths to the building. Nowadays the technology has advanced further; this is what we built 9 years ago. The platform has never returned a single busy signal. The primary change since the time of this video was a move to convert all voice traffic to IP at the edge of the data center, using SIP and RTP within the DC, and eliminating the telephony equipment within the pods, enabling a more horizontal scaling strategy.
