JAPANESE ELECTRONICS GIANT Sony was in town today and kindly gave The INQUIRER a look at its latest laptop, the Viao Z.

It's a quite compact machine that has some serious specifications. It also comes with a couple of accessories in the Power Media Dock and an optional 'sheet battery'.

The Viao Z laptop has an Intel Sandy Bridge Core i7 processor that can clock up to 3.4GHz with Turbo Boost, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. The 13.1in display has an anti-reflective screen and 1600x900 resolution.

The Power Media Dock has an external optical drive - optional Blu-ray - and also an AMD Radeon HD 6650M graphics card in it. Sony expects its Viao Z laptop to be available at the end of July and says it will cost around £2,000 with the dock. µ

  • I have one of this and I have to say I like it, the on board graphics is so powerful that can handle main stream gaming at a lower resolution or setting, with super battery life and super thin and light weight, plus bluray burner, 13 sec boot time and external graphic boost 3d support, full hd screen, this laptop just overwhelm all other laptop in this class.I had a z128 and x, z217 is like more powerful z at almost x seriers size, It's a great leap from the z1.

  • actually 720p is HD, 1080p is Full HD

Looking quite nice imo, having old Z with 1600x900 I would say anything beyond that res would be an overkill, at least for me. Too bad, so much have been sacrifice for slender design, I mean, you need to remove all cables/connectors before closing the lid?! Too thin for my taste. Also I don't like idea of carrying 2 units. So comparing to old Z, I don't see any reason to upgrade but having latest and greatest all the time...

  • @macca202 actually you can get it in 1920x1080 on the sony site as well

  • @macca202 720p and above IS HD.

  • @MrCswint25 Are you joking? Have you ever looked at the outrageous bezel on any Macbook? The company that is said to be on the cutting edge of product design uses a bezel that could hold, in your words, two 3 lane highways. Those laptops, at these specifications, are not far off the price either.

  • BEZEL ALERT! BEZEL ALERT!

$2,000 + notebook computer has a bezel that is as wide as a 3 lane highway!

At this price range Edge - to - Edge glass should be standard!

  • 3:59 Did he really mix up left and right there? :o

  • :1600x900 so above HD" ? um no HD is 1920x1080
