This video exposes yet again the dangerous, half-assed nature of the USMC egomaniac. The disintegration of Force Recon into mere short-range scouts and a desire of the marine grunt infantry to be "special" without paying the price to be initiative-taking, thinking professionals has resulted in a low-speed, helicopter, foot-slogger; a mechanical crutch for the weak unwilling to parachute who don't surprise anyone as they can be heard from miles away:

http://www.geocities.com/airbornemuseum/sld026.htm

The USMC can't even do helicopters right; it fails to invest in rear ramp fast rope attachment points so two sticks of troops can slide off the rear ramp as one stick goes down the hell hole as the U.S. Army's MH-47E Chinooks have:

http://www.combatreform.com/fries.htm

Thus, exposing the hovering helicopter for MINUTES to enemy fires instead of SECONDS.

Next, the rotor down wash is so severe under the sky-gray (attaboy, USMC) CH-53E Super Stallion heavy lift helicopter, that the fast rope is not even touching the ground! Clearly a WEIGHTED, PADDED, SLIDER carry bag needs to be developed (it could be one of the troops' rucksacks) to pull down on the end of the fast rope to create a ground junction holding the rope vertically so troops don't get injured by not having a clearly visibly point to let go of the rope as depicted in our other FRIES video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSdVhuT287w

Reports say the hurricane-downwash V-22 requires WEIGHTED fast ropes so perhaps these will become standard for all VTOL aircraft that use FRIES.

YOUTUBE member drlogic1978 writes:

"I was MIOPS boarding party RN & have done a shitload of fast ropes onto vessels. I agree with the criticisms raised here but would like to point out 1 flaw in US fast roping style. Boots on the rope. Not good. Brits are taught never to put boots on the rope because polish/boot leather streaks the rope making it uber-slippery for the next man down. I personally saw 1 unlucky bitch plummet 20ft on a training tower at HMS Cambridge. Sort this out first USMC! No more gay boot sliding."

While the French Commandos are at least wearing rucksacks simulating mission gear, the gyrenes are not even carrying any M16 assault rifles/M4 carbines! Other videos on YOUTUBE show marines fast roping from the hell hole of smaller CH-46 medium-lift helicopters with rucks and carbines so we know ITS POSSIBLE:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pqm_SazQKQ

The CH-53E is a great helicopter that was ruined by absurd USMC requirements to carry around a built-in fuselage for foot-slogger victims losing 6 TONS of payload that even early "A" models could have been carrying an Ontos or M113-derived "Mini-Gavin" light tank/APC to gain air-mech capabilities like the Russians do with BMDs and our NATO allies do with Gavins, Scimitars, Bv206es, Vikings, and Wiesels. At the very least, a retracting vehicle floor plate/4-point winch system with extended leg landing gear should be developed to hover insert/extract M113 Mini-Gavins by Streamlined External Loading (SEL) if a place to airland them off the rear ramp is not tactically possible or desirable.

If U.S. Army 101st Airborne (Air Assault) troops and gyrenes persist in this dismounted, foot-slogger victim madness

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WDcxfu_v3Q

delivered by slow, loud, vulnerable helicopters not even masked by smokescreens

http://www.combatreform.com/smokescreen.htm

we are going to continue to have debacles like took place daily in Vietnam, the Koh Tang fiasco in 1975, BlackHawk Down! in 1993 and the O'Grady near-disaster in 1995.

http://www.combatreform.com/pathfind.htm

The V-22 can't carry light tracked tanks and should be discarded. The CH-53 should be made into a "Speed Stallion" using Piasecki VTDP/wings technologies so troops in Mini or AmphiGavins

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hbUusptJbs

can be flown in at 250 mph and not get shot-down before getting to fight.

  • where was the screw up?

  • ask julius153 he could figure it out

  • dude does money mean anything to you!? number two, in a hot lz environment, 60 birds either air force or army would carry them, or even the uh-1y, joint ops, the marines need these large helos to get gear from ship to shore, theres nothing wrong with the helicopter, this is not combat, these marines look lke theyre limited duration equiped fast rope training... if they can fast rope from this bird, they can fast rope from anything, doesnt matter what bird your roping from in training...

  • @BuckshotFX4 Not entirely true, PROS train on EXACTLY what they use not make excuses that they are good enough with just one platform; this kind of ad hocery constantly bites the USMC in the ass, look at OIF in 2003

  • i dont see you doing this shit so dont judge and this is obviously training u moron

  • @mrgoodie julius153 could figure it out, why can't you?

  • Has anyone stopped to consider that this might have been a simple training op and some of the guys might have been going down the rope out an actual flying helo for the first time? You can slide down from the tower all you want but doing it for real requires practice before you get as good as some Special Ops Unit.

  • Wanna talk 'malignant' narcicism? Try the Air Force. We spend billions on our penis extenders. "Fiber optic, stand off, fire and forget, precision, jointness?" Those words = blank check. Its worse than a trade union. Its a Star Trek convention and everyone seems to think this whole war thing is just a fantasy role playing game. "What?! you dont have enough manna to do that. Only I'm allowed to do that. Stop making me look bad." Punishment by paperwork and blind adherance to tech data.

  • @penquinbum Very, VERY good point

  • Been there done that. Except we had just grabbed and slid down we didn't scoot up to the rope on our asses.

  • the screw up was the double ropers the dude was 5 secs. from the ground before the other guy went

  • if ur a marine disregard, fast roping horror story of a marine that dropped his rifle and then impaled as he fell on it. morale of the story: always keep your rifle arm distance away.

  • @penquinbum And that's why we are LOSING in Iraq/Afghanistan. Young punks without maturity follow the inept bureaucracies blindly, kill innocent civilians and themselves. The "Wars" you describe are actually RACKETS to prolong violence for $. We need a PROFESSIONAL military of adults that SMOTHERS wars by excellence.

  • @SOjuice Semper Fi. Let's face it, the reason they're so young is that what we do is a young man's game. If you could only teach the patience and decision making skills of a 40 year old to the 19 yr old, it would make a difference, but wars are fought by kids. The average age of US enlisted men in Vietnam was something like 19.5 years. In the all volunteer forces today it isn't much higher.
