This is a more close-up view of what I'm doing. Better vision, better light, better detail. This part isn't really much work, just time-consuming. Most of the effort is spent pushing the soil back and forth, and GENTLY pressing down on the hoe while pushing.

I can't stress this enough. That galvanized hardware cloth is strong, but if you beat on it enough, it will tear, snap and/or break. Just this job alone saw me putting three holes in it when I got careless.

Also, because the question will probably come up, I used roofing nails to tack in the cloth. Why nails instead of staples? For the same reason you don't use staples on roof shingles: holding power and stress distribution.

The large, flat head of the roofing nail will provide lots of support over a wider area than a staple, so it won't cut through the metal fabric. You could add a strip of wood to give it even more strength and holding power, but I wanted something fast, cheap and durable for the price. And this is it.
