This video shows a rare phenomenon: an adult common swift bird eating and drinking on its own.
Ususally, common swift birds will not do this and have to be fed manually, which requires a lot of experience by the feeding person (see our youtube.com videos on "how to feed an adult swift" and "how to feed a young swift" for more information).
However, this fella eats and drinks on its own.
This video was taken at the swift clinic in Frankfurt, Germany. For more information on common swifts and the swift clinic, visit www.apusapus.net (Please note: Content is available in German at this time only. We are currently working on an English version.)

  • Mine doesnt do that!

How did you launch the bird so it would fly?

  • @TsukiShia: Just put the swift on your hand, raise your arm ("statue of liberty position") and wait for the take-off. If the swift doesn't take off after at most 30 seconds, there's always something wrong with the bird.

  • la mia piccola ninni ha mangiato da sola per 2 anni

poi ha smesso di colpo e ora sono costretta ad aprire il suo becco per far si che mangi

  • I do not speak Italian, but from what Google translated me, I am really worried: Are you implying that you have been keeping a common swift bird in captivity for two years?

Sorry, but it was probably your fault. You usually have to open their beaks and force feed them.

  • A baby swift attempted to fly and failed then landed in our house (what are the ods) then we had to feed him/her but he/she was so weak he/she couldnt even open his beak :( so he/she died of starvasion soon after D: the rspca didnt get here quick enough!!!! Im actually so annoyed with them! :,(

  • help him,so that he can continue his life(=flying) again...

  • I wish mine did that T_T

  • @dgfmev

you right... it's an irresponsability to keep a swift in captivity....

  • @oriana99 questi animali devono essere liberati appena sono pronti...

  • What? You are feeding it! How much more manually can you get?

  • Every year I take from the earth small swifts that I find and all were released. Ninni only remained with us and one (Pollicino) died due to aspergillosis.
