2011 Special Summit on New Nuclear Energy
June 21-22, 2011

Opening Congressional Perspective Keynote: The Honorable Ed Whitfield

Congressman Ed Whitfield
Chairman, House Subcommittee on Energy & Power
First elected to Congress in 1994, Congressman Whitfield is currently serving his ninth term representing Kentucky's First Congressional District. In addition to his Chairmanship of the Subcommittee on Energy & Power, he also serves on the Subcommittee on Environment and Economy and the Subcommittee on Health.

Summary of Keynote:
Congressman Ed Whitfield addresses the obstacles that new nuclear technology faces today in the United States. Whitfield calls into question the current administration efforts in moving forward with further developing our nuclear infrastructure and for having unobtainable energy goals for the future of the nation. The Congressman believes that the path to creating a more energy efficient and energy secure United States is through a diverse energy portfolio, including coal, natural gas, and nuclear technologies. Congressman Whitfield asserts that the way forward is for Congress to employ a more bi-partisan social attitude if it wishes to speed up the process of enacting positive energy initiatives for the nation.

About the Summit:
The 2011 Special Summit on New Nuclear Energy featured perspectives from government, industry and the non-governmental community as well as roundtable discussions on the state of the global "Nuclear Renaissance" -- including lessons from the recent earthquake and tsunami-related events at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station in Japan; insight from the financial community on new nuclear investment; status reports on new nuclear "first movers"; and assessments of the U.S. licensing paradigm. The Special Summit also focused on new nuclear infrastructure readiness including nuclear technology advancement; supply chain and workforce readiness; and development of a sustainable fuel cycle. The Special Summit was moderated by Llewellyn King, the Executive Producer and Host of White House Chronicle on PBS. The Summit was organized under the auspices of the United States Nuclear Infrastructure Council, the leading national think tank advocate for new nuclear energy.
